The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum, research center and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The institution was founded in 1966 by General and Mrs. L. Kemper Williams. Longtime New Orleans residents and avid collectors, the Williams’ established the organization to keep their collections intact and available to the public. In the 40-plus years since its inception, The Collection has augmented its holdings and physical properties, established ambitious publishing and exhibition schedules, and developed innovative educational programs.

The Collection operates two facilities in the French Quarter. The principal gallery, guided tours and museum shop are located in a complex of historical French Quarter buildings at 533 Royal Street. The Williams Research Center, at 410 Chartres Street, opened in 1996 and houses the archive, library, reading room and additional exhibition space. The Collection’s holdings comprise some 35,000 library items, more than two miles of documents and manuscripts, and approximately 350,000 photographs, prints, drawings, paintings and other artifacts.

• In 2010, The Historic New Orleans Collection was named “Museum of the Year” by the Louisiana Association of Museums

Publications

• The Collection’s latest and most ambitious publication, Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture, 1735 – 1835, is the first comprehensive study of early Louisiana-made furniture. The volume, beautifully illustrated with more than 1,200 images, is available online at www.hnoc.org and Amazon.com, in The Collection’s gift shop and in various book stores around the city.

• In 2010, The Collection launched the Louisiana Musicians Biography Series with the release of Unfinished Blues: Memories of a New Orleans Music Man by Harold Battiste with Karen Celestan.

The Young Leadership Council (YLC), a non-profit, non-partisan civic organization created to develop leadership through community projects, is the oldest young professional organization in the country. Since it began in 1986, the YLC, with more than 1,300 member-volunteers, has developed and implemented a large number of projects throughout the greater New Orleans area that have had lasting positive effects on the community and the economy.

A few the YLC’s projects include raising money to add lights to the Crescent City Connection, establishing the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, starting the New Orleans: Proud to Call It Home campaign and coordinating the Wednesday at the Square spring concert series. Past YLC member-volunteers have become some of the most influential leaders in the City who attribute their leadership capabilities in part to their previous work with the organization.
Recent and upcoming activities:

• On November 9, the YLC relaunched the popular New Orleans: Proud to Call It Home campaign with a new, interactive component to capitalize on the optimism and enthusiasm of Post-Katrina New Orleans. • December 18 from 10am – 2pm: Volunteer with the Green It project and assist with coastal wetland propagation and planting through the LSU Ag Center’s Wetland Plant Center in City Park.

 The Louisiana State Museum has rightly been described as “Louisiana’s Louvre.” Founded in 1906 with a mission to collect, preserve, interpret and present the state’s rich history and diverse cultures, the Museum’s collection now totals more than 450,000 artifacts and works of art. These provide an authentic experience of Louisiana to visitors from around the world while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

The “collection” includes a complex of seven historic French Quarter buildings that have become icons of New Orleans – especially the Cabildo and Presbytere on Jackson Square — and a statewide system of museums in Baton Rouge, Thibodaux, and Patterson, La. Meanwhile, a $17-milllion sports museum and Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is under construction in Natchitoches, La.

The museum drew a record 285,000 visitors last year. Strong attendance is expected to continue with a major new exhibition Living With Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond opening October 23 with gala celebration on Jackson Square.
